Walking and Hiking
Our spectacular grounds boast paths to suit leisurely walks or vigorous hikes—or you can head toward nearby Grandfather Mountain for trails that reveal waterfalls, bridges and more. Bring your binoculars for spotting birds and butterflies. Guided hikes are available for a fee.
Shoot the 5-stand—a European classic in shotgun sports—at our sporting clay venue just a short drive from The Lodge. You can also enhance your skills with private or group lessons from NSCA Level I shooting instructors. Ammunition is available for purchase or you may bring your own, and rental shotguns are available for $20 a session.

Canoeing and Paddle Boarding
With Mad River Legend canoes, flat bottom johnboats, Bote paddle boards, and kayaks our fleet is equipped for a trip of any size. So grab a paddle and get acquainted with Kawana Lake, a real High Country gem. Canoeing classes cover basic strokes, advanced techniques, safety, and water rescue.

Join Alan Burchell, our Director of Outdoor Programs and a Wulff-certified fly fishing instructor, to hone your trout fishing or fly casting skills—whether you’re an avid or casual participant. Half-Day Wade Trip / $250
A four-hour guided wade trip on private sections of the Linville River. Includes fly rod rental, waders, flies, and rod fee for stream access—plus tips on improving your roll cast and more. You’re welcome to bring your own gear, but remember to use barbless hooks, as we’re strictly catch-and-release.
Full-Day Float Trip / $450
We’ll take two anglers to the South Holston or the Watauga River for a beautiful day of tail-water fishing. Includes all equipment, a shore lunch, beverages, and transportation.
Fly Fishing Lessons/ $60 per hour
Whether you seek basic casting instruction, knot tying, fly selection, and catch-and-release how-tos, to more advanced techniques such as improving casting distance and accuracy, our instructors can help. Further guidance in alternative casts, advanced knot tying and fly presentation is also available.
Fishing equipment and other accessories will be available to members and guests of The Lodge on a daily or multi-day rental plan. Rods and reels as well as other fishing gear are available for purchase on a special-order basis.
